Lord, it was hot. Yesterday. In Alameda. Royal Crown Something or Other Regional Rark.
That's where we had the company picnic.
But praise the Lord Almighty it was not a pot luck this year.
Last year, we had a potluck, and it was a total disaster because nobody brought anything.
This year, they got smart and hired a caterer, and the food was fabulous!
Even the chicken was fabulous, and it's hard to do chicken for a lot of people. I think that's why my grandmother always made turkey.
Anytime there were more than five people in my grandmother's apartment, she would put a turkey in the oven. It was like one of her rules of life.
But no way would I have wanted to cook a turkey yesterday. Or even my prize winning Quiche Lorraine. Too hot. Our house is usually so comfortable, but the past few days, it's like "Cool Hand Luke" in here.
Even out in Alameda it was hot. And one thing about Alameda, on a hot day, it can start to smell kinda funky.
I took one look at all those pelicans and I said to Tony, "We are gettin' the heck out of here before low tide!"
